New to the Closet: Spring Clean from Jenni Kayne

Jenni Kayne silk and linen oversized jacket from resort and D'Orsay flats in caramel suede

A new white blazer is like a breath of fresh air for your wardrobe, and we're particularly fond of this style from Jenni Kayne's resort collection (purchased on sale which is even more exciting). The now iconic D'Orsay flat is a perfect transition shoe because it gives you the ease of a sandal, no matter the temperature. In California, it's a year round no-brainer! Inspired by: Creativity at Work

"Creativity at Work" by Heather Clawson is an amazingly inspiring book, showing all kinds of creatives where they work. Interspersed with great words of wisdom, there is some serious eye candy in these pages! Jenna Lyons' and Jenni Kayne's spaces are a few of the standouts for us. Heather Clawson, of the blog Habitually Chic has done a perfect job of opening the office doors of some of the most creative people who have followed their bliss.

Jenni Kayne at the Brentwood Country Mart

Now for the Jenni Kayne boutique -- we would be remiss not to talk about its perfectness! First of all, the clothes are shown in inspired color stories in the racks and on the shelves (the palette and patterns for Spring/Summer 2013 are just right), mixed in with accessories from the JK line and also from Clare Vivier, Proenza Schouler, and Patricia Underwood. We fell in love with the Patricia Underwood for JK Bogart fedora, inspired by a man's hat but with a feminine twist.  We've also been huge fans of JK's Italian-made D'Orsay flats (that make us think of Talitha Getty in Marrakesh) and she does them in such delicious hues. It's highly possible that a pair will be finding its way into one of our closets soon...

Jenni Kayne is so good at the menswear twist on womenswear: a little bit preppy, a little bit borrowed from the boys, but all cool and feminine. Her jackets and blazers are cut amazingly well, with a perfect drape. Kristin was eyeing a white oversized one from the resort collection.

While we were oooing and ahhing, the girls at Jenni Kayne were so friendly, welcoming and helpful. From the moment we stepped in with Romy (our mini dachshund/bodyguard) we were made to feel very comfortable. It's a lovely, clean lined space that is cozied up with plants and impeccably edited home goods, including L'Artisan Parfumeur (we love the amber ball). The exquisite offering of jewelry throughout the store features unique designers including Lena Wald and Kathryn Bentley. Kristin snapped up a colorful one-of-a-kind bracelet with an evil eye from Dream Collective, made from African record beads. The earrings were especially seductive, and some of them (if not all) you can buy individually to mix and match (or wear just one - 80s style)! And one case starred a sparkling selection from a fave of ours: bling king Tom Binns.

We look forward to going back...hopefully soon!

Field Trip: Clare Vivier for Jenni Kayne at the Brentwood Country Mart

Designer Clare Vivier and a selection of her bags

Our finished personalized small clutches!

The combined charm of Clare Vivier + Jenni Kayne makes us a bit giddy, and we thoroughly enjoyed our field trip to the Jenni Kayne store at the Brentwood Country Mart to experience a selection from the chic CV bag collection in person. We gushed over a range of CV bags, including those created exclusively for Jenni Kayne. The colors and textures made choosing just one a challenging task (we lingered over the decision for at least an hour); our eyes hopped from haute hot pink, electric grape, and cherry red to classic camel, navy, olive, cream, and a lived-in denim blue.

The signature foldover clutches are endlessly useful, from the wallet size to oversize options. We love the wallet size that makes a great little evening bag carried on its own, and also functions as the perfect makeup pouch for travel and everyday use. Another happy surprise: the Escale duffle bag in navy with classic top handles and a long strap for perfect versatility. We saw a number of those lovelies march out the door during our visit.

We were lucky to have a little chat with the lovely Clare, who mentioned that she gets the key collection colors from Jenni Kayne in advance and then includes those colors in her bag designs for JK. The citrus stripe and other bold brights on camel lend a just-right jolt of color, and are insanely stylish when carried with a complementary-hued ensemble (three cheers for the preppy + punk = prunk aesthetic). We love that Clare produces her bags ethically and that they are locally made in Los Angeles. And how cool is this: the event included a free small or large monogram on your chosen bag in gold or white. We went big in gold and couldn’t be happier.
